Foreword
The second volume of IEDAs emerges at a moment when disciplinary certainties continue to dissolve, and creative practices increasingly function as a critical mode of inquiry into the entangled realities of our contemporary world. Under the theme Intersectionality: Creative Inquiries, this volume brings together voices that examine how identities, systems, histories, ecologies, technologies, and embodied experiences intersect to shape the conditions through which knowledge is produced, contested, and lived.
As an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal, IEDAs remains committed to fostering transdisciplinary dialogues that move across and beyond conventional academic and artistic boundaries. Situated within the Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts and Design at Beaconhouse National University, and developed under the patronage of the UNESCO Chair on Inclusion through Art, the journal continues to position artistic and design practices not merely as aesthetic exercises, but as vital methodologies for critical engagement, social reflection, and speculative thought.
This volume expands upon the journal’s ongoing commitment to practice-based and research-led contributions by foregrounding intersectionality as both a conceptual framework and a lived experience. The works assembled here explore multiplicities of applications and positionality through diverse forms of inquiry — textual, visual, performative, archival, pedagogical, and material. Together, they ask how creative practices can illuminate overlapping structures of power, resistance, memory, displacement, ecology, gender, technology, labour, and belonging within rapidly shifting global and local contexts.
Rather than treating intersectionality as a fixed category, the contributors approach it as a dynamic and evolving process: one that reveals the layered negotiations between self and system, body and institution, history and futurity. Across geographies and disciplines, the volume highlights voices that challenge singular narratives and instead embrace complexity, contradiction, hybridity, and relationality as productive sites of knowledge-making.
IEDAs continues to benefit from the guidance of its international editorial and advisory networks, alongside the support of the South Asia Foundation and Madame France Marquet, whose sustained commitment to cultural dialogue and regional collaboration remains foundational to the journal’s vision. The journal also carries forward the pedagogical and artistic legacies of the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute for South Asian Arts (UMISAA), reaffirming the importance of collaborative and transnational approaches to art and design education.
With this second volume, IEDAs further consolidates its role as a platform for rigorous, experimental, and situated forms of inquiry. It invites readers to engage with creative practice not only as representation, but as a critical and transformative act—one capable of opening new ways of seeing, relating, and imagining otherwise.
Foreword
(Volume 01)
IEDAs is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal (ISSN 3104-994X) committed to showcasing both emerging and established practices that operate across, between, and beyond disciplinary boundaries. Aligned with the ethos of its institutional home at Beaconhouse National University, particularly the Mariam Dawood School of Art and Design, under the auspices of the UNESCO Chair on Inclusion Through Art, the journal positions itself at the intersection of artistic, design, and research-based methodologies, foregrounding inquiries that engage with material, social, and conceptual transformation.
IEDAs responds to the growing need for scholarly and practice-based platforms that acknowledge the shifting contours of art and design in the 21st century. It invites contributors to reflect critically and speculatively on how transdisciplinary practices can reframe our understanding of knowledge, collaboration, and lived experience.
Working across media, disciplines, and geographies, IEDAs supports a diverse range of submissions – textual, visual, performative – highlighting practice-as-research as a valid and urgent mode of knowledge-making. It aims to become a site where pedagogy, aesthetics, and criticality converge; where designers, artists, and researchers share work that is both situated and speculative.
IEDAs is an initiative of the Inclusion Through Art program at BNU, and benefits from the guidance of an international editorial board and an active advisory council. It is made possible through the support of the South Asia Foundation and Madame France Marquet, whose continued commitment to regional collaboration and cultural dialogue underpins this project. The journal also draws upon the pedagogical and artistic legacies of the UMISAA (UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute for South Asian Arts) program.
With this first volume, IEDAs inaugurates a space for rigorous, expansive, and situated inquiry, welcoming contributions that reimagine the possibilities of transdisciplinary artistic and design research.
